The Secret Origin of the Slur
During the filming of The Chamber of Secrets, Isaacs wanted to ensure that Lucius Malfoy’s deep-seated bigotry against non-magical people felt incredibly vile and real. While filming the bookstore confrontation scene with the Granger family, Isaacs decided to improvise the highly offensive wizarding slur "Mudblood" right to Hermione’s face, a word that had not actually been written into that specific part of the script. The young Emma Watson had no idea the insult was coming, and her genuine shock and hurt reaction was captured perfectly on film. Director Chris Columbus loved the terrifying, localized tension it added to the scene so much that he kept the take in the final cut, establishing Lucius as a truly irredeemable villain from his very first movie.
