The striking, aristocratic visual identity of Lucius Malfoy was not written in the original scripts or designed by the costume department; it was entirely the brainchild of Jason Isaacs himself. When he first saw the concept art for the character, Malfoy was supposed to wear a standard, short pinstripe suit and have ordinary dark hair. Isaacs vehemently protested, arguing that a powerful, ancient wizard would not dress like a modern Muggle businessman. He pushed heavily for the flowing, ice-blonde wig and the velvet robes to create a look of supreme, otherworldly arrogance. The filmmakers agreed, though the long hair presented a hilarious physical challenge on set: Isaacs constantly had to tilt his chin upward and walk with an incredibly stiff, haughty posture just to keep the long platinum strands from falling over his face, which accidentally made the character look even more pompous and condescending.
