The iconic casting of Jason Isaacs as the sinister Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise only happened because of a profound moment of career frustration. Isaacs originally entered the audition room aiming for the role of the vain, comedic fraud Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. However, director Chris Columbus was so intrigued by Isaacs' presence that he asked him to read lines for Lucius Malfoy instead. Having just finished playing the brutal Colonel Tavington in The Patriot, Isaacs was deeply frustrated by the prospect of being typecast as yet another cartoonish villain, so he delivered the Malfoy lines with a deeply bitter, annoyed, and resentful sneer. Ironically, this exact display of aristocratic irritation and genuine anger was precisely what the filmmakers were looking for, leading them to offer him the life-changing role on the spot.
